Being Updated
Recently Florence, South Carolina — A back-to-school party at Royall Elementary School took an unexpected turn when a post on social media upset parents and people in the Florence area. There were a lot of Mexican decorations in the post, and some staff members were dressed like border patrol agents. Within a few hours, the picture was taken down, and district officials said they were sorry in public. The Florence One Schools say they fixed the problem right away and made a number of staff changes after an internal review. Later, the district hired temporary administrators to keep things running smoothly while they worked on rebuilding trust with families. Parents and community leaders were angry, but they also told people to use the moment as a chance to grow. At a meeting in the community, one parent said, "Our schools need to show the respect and understanding we teach our kids." In the weeks that followed, Royall Elementary School changed its focus to teaching students how to be more inclusive and how to talk to each other.
