Devonshire Alternative Elementary School recently achieved a major milestone in its early literacy program. Students in the primary grades had the highest levels of proficiency on their mid-year reading assessments. The school was able to conduct its annual “Family STEAM Night” with local science experts and families coming together for a day of interactive engineering challenges. The campus also was recently recognized for its innovative “Buddy Program,” which pairs older students with younger students to create a culture of support.

Ans. Our curriculum is focused on student choice and multi-sensory learning so that each child can discover his or her own unique path to academic success.

Q2. What is unique about the engineering work taking place in the Devonshire STEAM lab?

Ans. Students respond to weekly “Design Challenges” that connect their classroom math lessons to real-world architecture by using recycled materials and digital software.

Q3. Does Devonshire Alternative have any specific student leadership for the primary grades?

Ans. We have a “Values Patrol” that elects students to help keep our environment kind and to lead their peers in school-wide spirit events.

Q4. How does the school recognize students for reading and character development monthly?

Ans. We have “Devonshire Stars” assemblies to celebrate students who have shown exceptional grit in working toward their reading goals or kindness to their classmates.

Q5. Can parents attend the “Alternative Learning” workshops at Devonshire campus?

Ans. Yes we have seasonal workshops where parents learn the same multi-sensory teaching techniques that we use in our classrooms to help their children at home.
