School 9-A new student-designed mural celebrating the legacy of Dr. King and the school’s message of social justice was unveiled by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student-run literacy clubs on campus are doing well and have recently been working to expand the library’s diverse book collections. The school also had a successful “Kindness Breakfast” to celebrate students who show empathy and integrity in their daily lives.
Q1. How does School 9-Dr Martin Luther King Jr make sure that the legacy of its namesake is a part of everyday campus life?
Ans. Students engage in daily social justice discussions and participate in annual peace marches to honor the ideals and community leadership of Dr. King.
Q2. Does School 9-Dr Martin Luther King Jr offer any special mentoring for students interested in urban leadership or advocacy?
Ans. We partner with local advocates to conduct leadership workshops that train students to make positive impacts in their Rochester neighborhoods.
Q3. What strategies does School 9-Dr Martin Luther King Jr use to promote the social-emotional well-being of its students?
Ans. We have a “Zen Den” on our campus where students can learn mindfulness and work with counselors to regulate their emotions.
Q4.Are there after school programs in the creative arts at School 9-Dr Martin Luther King Jr for students to join?
Ans. Yes, our school has a very active drama and choir club and students have the opportunity to perform for the community many times during the year.
Q5. How does School 9-Dr Martin Luther King Jr incorporate families in the academic goal setting process each school semester?
Ans. We hold “Heritage Dinners” where parents and teachers work together to construct individual learning and social success plans for each student.
