School 16-John Walton Spencer is celebrating a major increase in student participation in its after school fine arts and instrumental music programs this school year. Recently, the school hosted a “Future Leaders” workshop with local professionals mentoring students in public speaking and community advocacy. The campus was also recognized for its new “Positive behavior” program, which has led to a great increase in school spirit and student kindness.
Q1. What unique historical projects do students at School 16-John Walton Spencer work on within the 19th Ward?
Ans. Students interview neighborhood elders to document the history and changes of the historic community of the 19th Ward.
Q2. Does School 16-John Walton Spencer have any special instrumental music programs for beginning elementary students?
Ans. We teach beginning students on a variety of instruments and they are able to play in the campus orchestra and local festivals.
Q3. What is the “Positive Behavior” system at School 16-John Walton Spencer and how does it encourage student kindness each day?
Ans. Students can earn “Spencer Stars” for helping their peers, which can be redeemed for fun rewards around campus and special leadership opportunities.
Q4. Do School 16-John Walton Spencer students have opportunities to participate in yoga or mindfulness in class?
Ans. Yes, our “Wellness Minutes” program has daily stretching and breathing exercises to help students remain calm and focused every day.
Q5. How can parents join the School 16-John Walton Spencer “Civic Leaders” volunteer group?
Ans. Parents who would like to help plan neighborhood beautification and school-wide service projects can sign up in the front office.
