About Special Music School

Special Music School (SMS) is located in New York City and provides a unique educational opportunity that combines rigorous academics with world-class training in music. Our school is located near Lincoln Center, and is the only public school in the U.S. that gives children private music lessons with a highly accomplished professional during the school day starting from kindergarten.

Children develop as musicians, as they learn music fundamentals such as performance, theory, and music technology, and excel in rigorous academics, including advanced and AP courses. Admission is based on musical talent rather than previous training to uphold our commitment to diversity and opportunity. Graduates of SMS have gone on to prestigious institutions like Juilliard, Columbia University, and NYU, and are regarded as one of the best elementary schools in the country for seriously talented young musicians.
