See top schools in HempsteadJoseph A. McNeil Elementary School, located at 335 South Franklin Street, Hempstead, NY 11550, serves grades 1 through 6 within the Hempstead Union Free School District. The student–teacher ratio is approximately 16 : 1, reflecting moderate class sizes relative to local averages. According to public data, only about 10% of students are proficient in math, and around 17% meet proficiency in reading/language arts. These figures are significantly below the New York State averages. The student community is composed of roughly 69% Hispanic, 27% Black/African American, and a small number of other groups, and about 65% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch,
suggesting a high-needs setting. Students generally feed into Hempstead High School, which boasts alumni active in athletics and community leadership, an example of the pathway from early education to secondary engagement in the district. For families looking to move into the zone, three-bedroom rental homes in the Hempstead/Long Island area commonly range between US $2,500 and US $3,500 per month, depending on home condition and location. While McNeil offers a community-based environment and full grade span up to sixth grade, the proficiency rates suggest that families seeking strong academic outcomes, especially in math, may want to explore how the school and district support remediation and enrichment.

Being Updated
In Spring 2025, Joseph A. McNeil Elementary held its inaugural “Family Homework Hub & Learning Night,” where students and their families gathered in the evenings for guided math and reading activities, parent-workshops, and school-community dialogues aimed at strengthening home-school connections and boosting student progress.
1. What support is in place for students who are behind grade level?
A. The school provides small-group intervention blocks during the school day and hosts after-school “Homework Hub” sessions; families should ask how students are identified and reassessed.
2. How does McNeil serve multilingual or diverse families?
A. Given the high percentage of Hispanic and multilingual students, McNeil offers bilingual communications, family-engagement workshops in Spanish and English, and supports multilingual learners via ENL/ESL services.
3. What extracurricular or enrichment opportunities exist beyond core academics?
A. Students may participate in music programmes, literacy clubs, and occasional STEM-oriented activities—though families may wish to ask about availability and after-school options given the academic focus.
4. What is the community and socioeconomic context of the school?
A. With approximately two-thirds of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school serves a high-need community; families can inquire about wrap-around supports, attendance programs and how the school engages families.
5. What housing considerations should families relocating into the zone keep in mind?
A. In the Hempstead area, three-bedroom rental listings typically fall between US $2,500 and US $3,500/month; families should evaluate commute, neighbourhood safety and whether they may want to budget for supplemental tutoring or enrichment given current proficiency levels.
