See top schools in HempsteadThe Hempstead Union Free School District runs the David Paterson School, which is at 40 Fulton Avenue in Hempstead, New York. It serves students in grades K–6. There is about one teacher for every 16.7 students. According to public data, only about 14% of students are good at maths and 24% are good at reading. About 68% of the students are Hispanic and about 27% are Black. About 62% of the students can get free or reduced-price lunch. The school is named after David A. Paterson, the 55th Governor of New York and a graduate of the Hempstead school system.
This shows how important the local community's history is. Families moving to the Hempstead area can usually find three-bedroom rentals for between $2,500 and $3,500 per month, depending on where they are and how well the unit is maintained. The school is a stable place to start because it has a focus on community and serves all elementary grades. However, families who want their children to do well in math or reading should look into the school's intervention supports and compare them to other schools nearby.

In 2025, the school launched its “Character Day & Read-for-Success Kickoff,” where students dressed as storybook characters, participated in a character parade and attended a family literacy night to ignite reading enthusiasm for the year.
1. What early intervention supports are in place for students behind grade level?
A. The school offers small-group instruction, after-school “Homework Hub” sessions and uses benchmark assessments to track progress, families should ask how frequently students are reassessed and how supports evolve.
2. How does the school support multilingual learners and their families?
A. With a large Hispanic and multilingual student body, the school provides bilingual family workshops, ESOL/ENL certified staff and parent-engagement nights in both English and Spanish.
3. What enrichment opportunities exist beyond the core curriculum?
A. Students may participate in clubs such as robotics, art circles and reading circles, and the school also hosts family-learning evenings and community partnerships.
4. What is the feeder pathway after grade 6 and why does it matter?
A. Students transition to local middle and high school in the Hempstead district; understanding this pipeline helps families plan early for academic trajectory and readiness beyond the elementary level.
5. What should families know about housing and relocating to the zone?
A. Three-bedroom rentals in the Hempstead area typically fall between US $2,500–3,500/month. Families should evaluate unit condition, commute, neighborhood amenities and whether supplementary tutoring may be needed given the school’s current proficiency figures.
