PS 87 recently honored its newest “Teacher of the Year” for her extraordinary dedication to student mentorship and instructional excellence. The school community successfully held its annual “Bronx Pride Jubilee,” a festival that celebrates student success in the fine arts and fosters a spirit of pride across the community. Campus students also benefit from a new literacy center where they can discover a broad array of books and develop advanced reading skills.
Q1. How do the “Math Power Hours” at PS 87 help students to build greater numeracy skills and confidence?
Ans. Fun, competitive math games and group problem solving are fun for kids. Complex numbers are a fun and rewarding part of everyday life.
Q2. Does PS 87 offer any family workshops focused on supporting student social development and mental health?
Ans. Our counselor holds “Coffee and Heart” sessions that teach parents daily practices to build resilience and positive communication with their children.
Q3. What are the different student leadership positions at PS 87, such as the “Kindness Crew”?
Ans. Students can register as “Kindness Ambassadors” to organize service projects on campus and help resolve peer conflicts on the playground through talking.
Q4. How does PS 87 celebrate the cultures of the Wakefield community in its schoolwide events?
Ans. Every year we have a “Wakefield Heritage Day” with music and food representing the many cultural heritages of our diverse student body.
Q5. Does PS 87 offer after school enrichment programs for traditional arts or digital painting?
Ans. Our “Studio 87” program gives students more time each semester to work on painting, digital photography and introductory graphic design.
