PS 66 School of Higher Expectations is located at 1001 Jennings Street in the Morrisania neighborhood. This campus serves 465 students in grades PK-5 with a student-teacher ratio of 12:1. Math proficiency is 47% and reading proficiency is 17%. The gender mix is 51% male and 49% female. Our school is dedicated to developing a caring environment that encourages personal responsibility and perseverance for academic success for all students. The academic program includes a special math workshop that focuses on developing number fluency through daily, hands-on problem solving. All grades are involved in a school-wide literacy initiative to promote independent reading. The school also integrates a visual arts curriculum that allows students to express their creativity through various media. Additionally, an after-school tutoring program provides targeted support for students looking to strengthen their core subject knowledge.
Q1. How does PS 66 keep students safe and secure in the morning when they arrive in the morning on Jennings Street?
Ans. We have a supervised entry system and dedicated safety agents to ensure that each child enters the building in a safe and orderly manner every day.
Q2. Is there any specific help for families new to the New York City school system at PS 66?
Ans. Our parent coordinator hosts “Welcome Workshops” to help new families complete school forms, lunch applications and our campus digital communication tools.
Q3. What hands-on math tools do students use daily in their numeracy workshops at PS 66?
Ans. In the classroom, students use tactile manipulatives and interactive software to visualize difficult math concepts and to solve real-world problems.
Q4. What student leadership opportunities (student council, etc.) exist on the PS 66 campus?
Ans. Our leadership team welcomes fourth and fifth graders interested in helping plan school spirit weeks and managing our campus-wide recycling program each year.
Q5. How do PS 66 parents get live updates on their child’s behavior and academic progress?
Ans. During the school week, teachers push instant photos, updates and academic milestones directly to parents’ phones using mobile communication apps.
