See top schools in Middletown Township
Walking into Leonardo Elementary on Hosford Avenue, you get that small-town feeling: teachers at the door greeting students, families chatting in the lot, and a sense of familiarity that encourages trust. This school serves grades K-5, and with around 270 students enrolled recently, the classes tend to stay tight and personal. According to NCES data, the student–teacher ratio is about 10:1, which means teachers have the bandwidth to notice when a child needs extra help or when they’re ready to be challenged. On the academic front, Leonardo sits somewhat below many of its township peers: around 42% of students reach math proficiency and about 57% reach reading proficiency in recent reports. Nearby schools in the district such as Lincroft Elementary and Nut Swamp Elementary often show higher proficiency rates, which means some families view Leonardo as more of a steady, community-oriented choice rather than the top academic pick.
The area surrounding Leonardo mirrors the school’s relaxed, neighborhood feel. Leonardo is off the beaten path of the more high-pressure zones in Middletown Township, and while housing is desirable and well-kept, it tends to reflect that quieter style. Recent local housing data suggests the average home value in the Leonardo zone is around $820,000, which gives a sense of the market pressure for rentals or moves into the district.
Regarding alumni, there are no well-known names making headlines, but many past students stay in or near the district, returning as educators, coaches, or volunteers. That kind of community continuity gives Leonardo its quiet strength: children see familiar faces in staff, and families feel rooted rather than transient.
New Playground Name
We are so excited to announce the name of our new playground! Following a school-wide and Robinson community vote we narrowed a large list of names down to four. Since our students will be using the playground on a daily basis, we gave them the final vote! 476.....

Being Updated
In October 2025, Leonardo Elementary launched its “Reading with Ace” initiative, the school’s therapy dog, Ace, joined reading circles in classrooms to boost confidence and fluency among younger students. The project is part of the school’s broader push to support both academic and emotional growth.
