Being Updated
Upchurch Elementary School began its transition into a dedicated STEM school in August 2025. A new STEM lab funded through a grant now provides hands-on learning experiences for all K–5 students.
Q1. How does Upchurch help people learn about saving resources early on?
Ans. As part of OPS's environmental awareness routines, students learn simple habits like turning off lights when they aren't using them and throwing away less trash.
Q2. How does the school get kids to learn math by touching things?
Ans. Students use math manipulatives with different textures, such as raised counters and foam shapes, to help them learn how to work with numbers.
Q3. What do students do to get ready for group reading circles?
Ans. Teachers use seat markers, steps for handing out books, and focus cues to help students calm down quickly and read together well.
Q4. How does Upchurch help kids learn how to put things into groups in science?
Ans. Students sort natural things like rocks, leaves, or seeds based on what they can see and discuss the patterns they see.
Q5. What does the school do to help students use the bathroom in a responsible way?
Ans. Students can safely use the bathroom and return to class on time if they know what to expect, see reminders, and have staff supervision.
