Ranked 238 of 246 in North Carolina
Top schools in Rocky MountRanked 238 of 246 in North Carolina
See top schools in Rocky MountWinstead Avenue Elementary sits on the south side of town where quiet streets and front-porch hellos still set the tone for the day. Classrooms are small enough to feel personal about 15 students for every teacher, which lines up with the North Carolina average and helps kids get noticed quickly when they’re stuck on a task.In math, the state’s bar lands near 51% proficiency; Winstead runs lower at about 28%, so teachers lean on hands-on math games and short “practice bursts” to nudge confidence forward instead of pushing worksheets.
Families often compare nearby schools before choosing a neighborhood: Benvenue posts roughly 28% math proficiency (a similar picture), while Englewood sits near 30%, so most parents focus more on school culture and teacher stability than chasing small percentage swings. Housing stays reasonable around here, a typical 3-bedroom rental in Rocky Mount runs close to $1,250+ per month, keeping monthly costs predictable for young families and teachers alike. There isn’t a headline-worthy “famous alum” tied to Winstead, but former students show up everywhere locally, coaching rec-league teams, working in clinics, shelving books at the library which, around here, counts as success. (No widely documented famous alumni found in public directories.)

Being Updated
In October 2025, the school organized its “Backyard Garden Day,” where students planted herbs and vegetables in raised beds behind the main building. Parents brought garden tools, teachers supervised, and local volunteers taught composting. What started as a science project quickly turned into a small community tradition, a hands-on reminder that growth takes patience and teamwork.
