See top schools in Rocky MountEnglewood Elementary sits quietly along South Englewood Drive in Rocky Mount, surrounded by calm residential lanes and old oak trees. It’s one of those schools where teachers know families by name and parents often stop by for quick chats after the morning drop-off. The school teaches students from grades 3 to 5 and has around 550 children enrolled. Each teacher usually manages about 19 students, which gives them enough room to understand individual strengths, though it’s a little higher than the state average.
When it comes to academics, Englewood is still building ground. Around 30 percent of its students reach grade-level proficiency in math, compared to the state average of about 51 percent. The teachers have responded by using smaller math circles and one-on-one support time, hoping to lift those numbers. Schools nearby, like Benvenue Elementary and Williford Elementary, show roughly similar outcomes, so the challenge is shared across this part of Nash County.
Families moving here often talk about how affordable the city feels. A three-bedroom rental near Englewood costs roughly $1,100 to $1,250 a month, depending on the neighborhood. That’s one reason many young families choose this area, it’s peaceful, green, and not too heavy on the pocket. Though Englewood doesn’t list any celebrity graduates, many former students have stayed connected with the school, volunteering later as tutors or joining the district as teachers. That quiet circle of return says a lot about the community’s bond.

Being Updated
In late October 2025, Englewood Elementary kicked off a new literacy push called “Read to Lead”. Older students partner with younger ones twice a week for shared reading and discussion. Teachers say the idea isn’t just about improving reading scores, it’s about making books feel friendly again. Parents also helped set up a cozy reading corner in the library with donated bean bags and lamps, turning it into a favorite spot during recess.
1. What makes Englewood different from other schools nearby?
A. Teachers here focus more on relationship-based teaching. Students are encouraged to speak up, ask questions, and even help peers during group lessons.
2. How does the school keep parents involved through the year?
A. Every month, teachers organize “Family Fridays,” where parents can sit in class for a short activity or reading session with their kids.
3. What kind of activities do students enjoy outside the classroom?
A. Children take part in spelling bees, art displays, and local history projects that tie lessons to the Rocky Mount community.
4. How does Englewood support students struggling in math or reading?
A. The school runs a daily “power hour,” where teachers work with smaller groups focusing only on problem areas, instead of regular lessons.
5. Are there any community events linked with the school?
A. Yes, the annual “Englewood Fair” each spring brings together families, local artists, and food stalls—part fundraiser, part celebration.
