Yates Mill was built in 1756 and is the oldest working gristmill in Wake County. It is now located in a 574-acre county park with trails, museum exhibits, and living history programs to teach people about both cultural and environmental learning. Visitors - families, teachers, or school groups - can immerse themselves in an experience which connects modern educational context to the history of North Carolina. Students and families can experience history, science, and conservation hands-on as they explore the mill. The mill's close proximity to Yates Mill Elementary School further strengthens the important connection between local history and student learning and adds an important community resource for students and teachers alike. The Beckoning of nature, history, and education is complementary to the mission of so many Elementary Schools in North Carolina.
