In May 2026, Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy Principal Dr. Mariah Walker was named North Carolina Principal of the Year. Walker was chosen from nine regional finalists to receive the statewide honor, and was recognized at a surprise campus celebration with students and staff. In her four years, the school had a 100 percent graduation rate and exceeded expectations for academic growth. The award honors leadership and school performance achievements among principals across North Carolina.
