Top 10% School in north carolina
Ranked 79 of 437 in north carolina
Top schools in JacksonvilleNorthwoods Elementary sits close to downtown Jacksonville, surrounded by quiet homes, small churches, and old trees that give the street a peaceful look. The building might not be new, but it feels warm inside, colorful hallways, laughter in the mornings, and teachers who always seem to have time for one more question.
Across North Carolina, the math proficiency average stays around 49%, and Northwoods holds that line. Teachers often break big lessons into short group talks and games to make numbers less intimidating. The teacher–student ratio allows enough space for personal guidance without rushing through the day.
Nearby schools such as Clyde Erwin and Stateside report similar performance, showing that the district keeps standards balanced. Families renting around Northwoods pay roughly $1,450 to $1,600 for a three-bedroom home. Many of the school’s students later attend Jacksonville High School, which counts a few local business founders, a youth pastor, and a former college athlete among its well-known alumni. Being Updated
Northwoods Elementary just finished its annual “History Comes Alive” Week, one of its most loved traditions. Each grade chose a time period — from early American life to the 1980s — and turned classrooms into mini-museums. Parents were invited to tour and hear students explain what they’d learned.
Fourth-graders built small wooden cabins to show colonial life, while third-graders recreated a 1950s diner using cardboard and chalkboard menus. Teachers dressed in costumes and played music from different eras. The cafeteria even served themed lunches. By the end of the week, families said it felt like walking through a live museum built entirely by kids. The principal called it “a reminder that curiosity is louder than any test score”.
1. What kind of atmosphere does Northwoods Elementary have?
A. It’s calm and community-based. Teachers greet students at the doors, and older kids help younger ones find classrooms. Parents describe it as steady, not rushed, not loud, just dependable.
2. How does the school help students improve in math and reading?
A. Through short daily practice sessions and after-school help. Teachers mix board games, puzzles, and storytelling to keep lessons fun. The idea is to make learning feel like part of the day, not extra work.
3. Are there creative programs for students?
A. Yes. Art and music play a big part here. The school also has a “Student News Crew” that records weekly updates aired on the hallway TVs.
4. How are parents involved in daily life?
A. There’s an active parent group that helps organize cultural nights, book fairs, and garden projects. Parents often read aloud in classrooms once a month.
5. What does the school do for emotional wellness?
