See top schools in JacksonvilleMorton Elementary sits a few miles south of downtown Jacksonville. The building looks simple from the road, red brick, small trees out front, and a playground that always has kids laughing before the first bell. Inside, it’s calm. Teachers know nearly every family. Parents say the staff calls if a child looks tired or quiet, which tells you how personal the place feels. Math scores are about the same as the North Carolina average. Teachers spend extra time after lunch helping small groups, mostly in math and reading. The ratio of students to teachers stays manageable, and that makes a difference here. Children talk about the science tables and reading corners more than tests.
Homes near Morton rent around $1,500 for three bedrooms. That’s fair for a town filled with service families from Camp Lejeune. A few graduates who went on to White Oak High School still stop by to read with younger students, a small but proud tradition.

Being Updated
Earlier this month the school ran a “Coats for Kids” drive. Dozens of jackets came in within three days. Fifth-graders helped fold and tag them before local shelters picked everything up.
