See top schools in JacksonvilleClyde Erwin Elementary sits in the middle of Jacksonville, close to the older neighborhoods and small family shops that have been here for decades. The school is one of the most recognized in the district, known for its friendly teachers and clean, well-kept classrooms. Parents say it’s the kind of place where everyone greets each other in the hallway, even if they’ve only met once.
Across North Carolina, the math proficiency average stands around 49%, and Clyde Erwin keeps pace with that benchmark. Teachers use hands-on lessons and team games to make math less intimidating. The teacher–student ratio stays comfortable enough for personal attention. Nearby schools like Southwest and Meadow View show similar results, proving that Onslow County schools hold steady quality.
Homes near the campus rent for about $1,450–$1,650 a month, drawing both military and local families. Many of Clyde Erwin’s graduates continue to White Oak High School, which counts local musicians, small-business owners, and a retired Marine officer among its proud alumni.

Being Updated
This month, Clyde Erwin Elementary hosted its “Culture and Kindness Week,” a full-school event celebrating diversity and empathy. Each classroom picked a country to represent. Students made flags, wrote greetings in different languages, and cooked small dishes with their parents at home to share.
The gym turned into a colorful display of maps and handmade crafts. On the final day, the school invited Jacksonville police officers and firefighters to read books about teamwork and respect. Teachers said attendance was the highest they’ve ever seen for a parent event. The principal closed the week saying, “We’re not just raising smart kids, we’re raising good neighbors.
1. What is the atmosphere like at Clyde Erwin Elementary?
A. It feels relaxed and personal. Teachers greet students by name, and the building hums quietly instead of buzzing with noise. Parents say it reminds them of the kind of school they grew up in, friendly, familiar, and steady.
2. How does the school support children who need extra help?
A. Small-group instruction is offered in both reading and math. Teachers often stay after hours for short tutoring sessions. The school also has a “Lunch Learning” corner where students can review lessons while eating with their friends.
3. Are there programs that build creativity and confidence?
A. Yes. The art and music rooms stay busy year-round, and students join seasonal theater performances. Every spring, the “Young Innovators Fair” lets children show inventions made from recycled materials.
4. How does Clyde Erwin involve parents in learning?
A. There’s an active PTA that runs family nights, book fairs, and volunteer drives. Parents also help maintain the school garden and assist during reading weeks.
5. What safety and emotional-wellness steps are taken?
