Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is North Carolina’s second-largest district, enrolling roughly 148,000 students across 186 schools, including 102 elementary campuses, and representing 175 countries with 209 spoken languages in 2024–25. During the 2023–24 academic year, about 53% of CMS students scored proficient on statewide reading and math exams, slightly below the state average of 54%, yet showing steady post-pandemic gains.
Notably, over 83% of schools met or exceeded academic growth goals—the highest in district history.
Despite campuses being removed from the low-performing list, nearly 40% still earned D or F grades, reflecting ongoing equity challenges across student groups.CMS is advancing early literacy via strategic Science of Reading implementation, district-wide instructional coaching, and expansion of magnet programs like the South Academy of International Languages.
