Being Updated
Gladys Noel Bates Elementary School in Jackson, Mississippi, is one of many schools that are getting better facilities as part of a bigger plan. A $250 million construction project is helping the school deal with overcrowding and make buildings that will last. This project will not only make schools better places to learn, but it will also help the local economy.
Gladys Noel Bates, the school's namesake, was a civil rights leader who fought for black teachers in Mississippi to get paid the same as white teachers.
