Being Updated
In 2025, SET Academy expanded its grade offerings; the Minnesota Department of Education approved its charter to include kindergarten through fourth grade starting in the 2021-22 school year; the school continues building out its full K-8 program.
Metro Schools announced that online learning options for SET Academy (K-5) are now officially approved, offering a full online program for elementary-aged students.
Q1: What academic programs and curriculum does SET Academy offer?
A: SET Academy’s elementary program includes literacy and comprehension strategies, balanced literacy (phonics, word study, guided reading, etc.), hands-on science (using resources like FOSS and Discovery Education), and aligned instruction in social studies and mathematics (using resources like Envisions). It also emphasizes individual goal setting and support for English Learners.
Q2: What is the school’s demographic composition and student population size?
A: SET Academy Elementary has approximately 331 students in grades K-6 according to GreatSchools. A high percentage of students are low income (free or reduced lunch eligible) and many are English Learners.
Q3: How are admissions handled for SET Academy?
A: SET Academy uses an admissions lottery when grade levels are full. Applications outside an open enrollment period are accepted if space is available. Siblings of current students and children of staff are given priority. The school does not discriminate by income, national origin, or disability, and offers reasonable accommodations for students with special needs.
Q4: How is SET Academy rated academically and what is its performance like?
A: On GreatSchools, SET Academy Elementary is rated 8/10, performing above average compared to other Minnesota elementary and charter schools. However, proficiency rates in reading and math are below state averages, reflecting ongoing challenges typical for schools with high numbers of English Learners and low-income students.
Q5: What are the school’s facilities, community engagement, or supports beyond core academics?
A: SET Academy offers both in-person and online learning (SET Academy Online for K-5). It prioritizes family and community partnership, supports for English Learners, differentiated instruction, and goal setting for students. The curriculum also integrates students’ lived experiences. As a charter school, it operates with oversight by Metro Schools Charter District.
