The city of Hagerstown, Maryland, located in the state’s scenic “panhandle” region, is home to just over 43,500 residents according to the 2020 census. This vibrant community offers a mix of small-city lifestyles with easy access to outdoor recreation, historic downtown charm, and a progressive suburban culture. In terms of elementary education, the public system served by Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) includes around 18 elementary schools in Hagerstown proper, serving over 9,300 students. Additionally, there are around 12 private elementary schools with about 2,200 students, many of which are religiously affiliated. The district emphasizes a curriculum aligned with Maryland’s College & Career Ready Standards, offers signature magnet programs in STEM, arts, and world languages, and supports student well-being through “community schools” wrap-around services. There are also the best middle schools in Maryland.
