Top 10% School in Louisiana
Ranked 13 of 157 in Louisiana
Top schools in LafayetteMyrtle Place Elementary has a different rhythm compared to nearby campuses because of its creative learning atmosphere. Louisiana’s math proficiency usually stays in the mid-forties to low-fifties, and Myrtle Place often lands near the upper half of that spread. Parents say teachers blend structure with a bit of playfulness, which helps kids engage comfortably. When comparing schools, families often consider Woodvale and Prairie for similar strengths. Three-bedroom rentals nearby often settle in the mid-$1,400s. For high school, Lafayette High is a common direction, and locals mention alumni who’ve gone into arts programs, tech studies, and business degrees. Q1. What makes Myrtle Place Elementary unique?
Ans. It is the Lafayette Parish School System's (LPSS) fully French Immersion Magnet Academy for elementary grades. Students receive instruction primarily in the French language, fostering bilingualism and bicultural understanding.
Q2. Who is the current Principal?
Ans. The current Principal is Ava Boustany Venable, appointed in late 2024.
Q3. How does a student enroll in Myrtle Place Elementary?
Ans. Since it is a Magnet Academy, enrollment is primarily through the LPSS Magnet Academies School Choice Lottery process. Entry points are typically in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade. Students must apply during the designated application window.
Q4. What is the instructional structure of the French Immersion program?
Ans. The program uses a dual-teacher model, particularly in the lower grades:
French Block: Students receive instruction in core subjects like Math, Science, and Social Studies entirely in French, taught by a native or near-native French-speaking teacher.
English Block: Students receive instruction in English Language Arts (Reading, Writing, and Spelling) taught by a certified English-speaking teacher.
Goal: The aim is to achieve bilingualism and biliteracy, with instruction strategies designed for children who enter the program with little or no French knowledge.
Q5. Where do the French Immersion teachers come from?
Ans. Myrtle Place employs teachers who are certified to teach in Louisiana. They must possess near-native fluency in French. Teachers may be local Louisiana teachers or come from around the world as part of exchange programs, such as those facilitated by CODOFIL (Council for the Development of French in Louisiana).
