Oak Hill Elementary School is a public school in Evansville, Indiana that teaches kids from kindergarten to sixth grade. The school has about 600 students and a student–teacher ratio of about 17:1. This means that the classrooms are small enough for students to get the attention and learning they need. Oak Hill Elementary puts a lot of emphasis on core academic skills, but it also puts a lot of emphasis on getting students involved, teaching in a way that includes everyone, and giving students age-appropriate enrichment opportunities. About 20–25% of the students at the school are minorities, such as Hispanic, Black, Asian, or multiracial students.
Based on state and national reports, about half of the students at this school are good at math and English Language Arts. This puts the school close to or slightly above the average for Indiana. Being Updated
Oak Hill Elementary has gotten a lot of attention from all over the state after doing very well on the state's basic reading test. Students at Oak Hill in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation district passed the IREAD-3 test at a rate of 97%, which is much higher than the district's average of about 83%. The school's reading specialist said, "Making literacy a priority at every level, every grade level." The school has switched to a "science of reading" approach for all grades, which means that interventions start well before third grade to make sure students are ready. The result not only makes Oak Hill more well-known, but it also shows parents and the community that early-grade support and inclusive academic strategies are working.
