Being Updated
In a recent community-engagement activity, fifth-grade students from Binford Elementary visited the nearby Indiana University Maurer School of Law in April. There, they acted out a fake trial based on the family-friendly movie "Despicable Me," playing the roles of lawyers, witnesses, jurors, and bailiffs. Outreach for Legal Literacy, a student group at the law school, ran the program. Its main goal was to teach kids basic legal ideas in a way that was appropriate for their age. The culminating trial found “defendant” Prescott liable and issued a symbolic award of $500 in damages to the “plaintiff,” after students presented arguments and deliberated. According to one law-student mentor, the schoolchildren were highly engaged and many said they looked forward to the weekly lessons.
