Ans. SAS is a designation given by LAUSD. Students in a SAS program receive enhanced quality of education beyond a standard curriculum; these enhancements focus on developing critical and creative thinking skills from the time they are in kindergarten. At Lockhurst, SAS exists in conjunction with the process of identifying students who are in the GATE program. All students receive a higher level of instructional quality than would be provided if they were not in a gifted program, regardless of whether or not they are formally identified as GATE.
Q2. How does Lockhurst Drive Charter's school include students with special needs?
Ans. Lockhurst Drive Charter Elementary fully includes all students with special needs in all classrooms. In fact, students with special needs are included with all of the students who have been identified as gifted, English learners, and in the general population of students. According to the school's mission statement, students with special needs are included as much as possible along with all other students through collaborative learning experiences which are designed for the benefit of all students. This model of inclusion is incorporated into the charter.
Q3. What type of after school program does Lockhurst Drive Charter have?
Ans. Beyond the Bell Branch Youth Services Program runs on school days providing after school enrichment and supervised activities for students in Grades 2-5. This program provides a safe place to be after school. Families can call the school at (818) 888-5280 to confirm if the program is still available and if they are eligible for enrollment.
Q4. How do the performance ratings for Lockhurst Charter compare to Calabash Charter, which is located not too far from Lockhurst Charter?
Ans. Lockhurst has a ranking of 859 as compared to Calabash with a ranking of 605. This means that Calabash is performing at a higher rate than Lockhurst. Another difference between the two schools is that Lockhurst operates on both a SAS and GATE level, whereas Calabash only classes under the GATE,' according to the best Elementary Schools Program, both schools hold badges recognizing them in this capacity.

Ans. Lockhurst Drive Charter Elementary school is an option for students residing anywhere in LAUSD by utilizing the Unified Enrollment Portal. Applications can be submitted during the district's annual open enrollment period. If any applicants exceed the number of available spots, then a lottery system will determine which applicants will be allocated placements, regardless of whether or not Lockhurst is a student's home school.
