About Penn Elementary

Penn Elementary is a public school in San Diego, California that teaches kids from kindergarten to fifth grade. The school has about 450 to 500 students and a student-teacher ratio of about 22:1. This makes for a balanced learning environment where students can get one-on-one help as well as work together in class. Penn Elementary has a full academic program that focuses on reading, writing, math, and science. The school focuses on project-based learning and critical thinking skills, as well as arts, technology, and physical education enrichment programs. We use social-emotional learning in our daily activities to encourage good behavior and a friendly school environment. The student body is diverse, and a lot of them are minorities, which is similar to the rest of the San Diego community. USA News says that about 32% of students are good at math and 57% are good at reading, which shows that there are still areas where they can improve academically. Funding for public schools follows rules set by the state and district.

Latest News

For the 2025–26 school year, Penn Elementary will be part of San Diego Unified's Community Schools program. This is a big deal for the school and the neighborhood around it. As part of this designation, the school will do more than just teach. It will also provide extra support for students and families right on campus. Planned improvements include more access to tutoring, resources for social-emotional learning, activities for families to get involved in, and partnerships with local groups to help students stay healthy.

School leaders and district officials have said that Penn Elementary's strong ties to the community were a big reason why it was chosen. The goal of the program is to improve relationships between teachers, families, and community partners while also removing academic and non-academic barriers to learning. Teachers and families are happy with the news, saying that the new services should make the school a more welcoming and supportive place for everyone.
