Being Updated
Teachers at McKinley Elementary are worried about the heat in classrooms lasting too long because the air conditioning units aren't working right. Teachers say that students and staff have had to deal with high temperatures—up to the mid-80s in some rooms—for more than 10 weeks this school year. They say this makes it hard to be comfortable, focus, and learn. Teachers say that portable air conditioners that are only meant to be used for a short time are not reliable because they leak and need to be checked on every day. Union leaders say that the problem is part of bigger maintenance problems in the San Diego Unified School District. They stress the need for faster repairs to make sure that students can learn in a healthy environment. The district admitted there was a problem and said they had ordered new parts. They plan to put in a new compressor while the students are away from school.
