About King-Chavez Arts and Athletics Academy

King-Chavez Arts and Athletics Academy, a public charter school here in San Diego, California, teaches elementary school kids. It's part of the King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools network, and it's got a normal amount of students for a city charter school. Class sizes are planned to get kids involved and make it easier for them to talk to teachers. The number of students per teacher is also planned to help teachers give more one-on-one attention. King-Chavez Arts and Athletics Academy focuses its academic stuff on the main things you're supposed to learn, but it really pushes the arts, gym, and sports. The students here are like the people who live nearby, with lots of minority students and people from all walks of life when it comes to money. USA News says that most students aren't doing as well as the state average in Math and English, so they need to keep at it. Since it's a public charter school, how much money they get is based on California's charter funding rules.

King-Chavez Arts and Athletics Academy in San Diego is getting a makeover as part of the King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools' plan for the 2025–26 school year. They're handing back the school's charter at the end of the 2024–25 school year, and the kids will move to the brand King-Chavez Community Academy. This move will merge a few King-Chavez schools into one big TK–8 setup, making it easier to run programs and give families in the neighborhood the academic help they need.

Before the change, students got to do some fun stuff, like join a surf team where 4th and 5th graders learned to surf and stay safe in the water. They also had artsy programs throughout the year with music, dance, and art, keeping up the school’s tradition of caring about the whole child.

This change shows the school cares about building community, giving students more chances, and creating a clear path through the King-Chavez system.
