Being Updated
Recent reports from San Diego Unified School District board meetings say that Cesar Chávez Elementary in the Southcrest neighborhood is getting attention for helping students read better at an early age. District data shows that almost 40% of K–1 students at Chávez made big strides in basic reading skills this school year. This was due to targeted literacy strategies, structured phonemic awareness instruction, and state literacy coaching support. These improvements are part of the school's larger plan to speed up learning and help students make up for lost time during the pandemic. Teachers at Chavez are also using data to guide their lessons and setting schoolwide goals to keep the momentum going into the spring semester. There are still problems, like how the school's overall academic performance compares to state averages, but the latest progress report shows that things are getting better in the early grades and that the school is committed to improving core literacy skills.
