Being Updated
Central Elementary, a long-standing school in the City Heights area, is at the center of a lot of community unrest as its closure date approaches. The South Bay Union School District recently voted to close Central Elementary at the end of the 2025–26 school year because enrollment was dropping quickly and the district was under budget pressure. This means that almost 400 students will have to move to nearby campuses next year. They say that the decision hurts student stability and community ties. In the meantime, leaders in the district are already making plans to change the boundaries and help the families who will be affected. In the middle of all this, the old Central campus has also been suggested as a safe place for families who are homeless to park, which brings up the ongoing conversation about how to best use the building to help vulnerable groups after classes are over.
