Being Updated
Fair Oaks Elementary made headlines in early 2026 when 3rd grade teacher Julia Romero was named a finalist for MDUSD's 2026-27 Teacher of the Year — one of only six educators recognized from nearly 150 nominees across the entire district. For a Title I campus of 297 students that often flies under the radar, the recognition puts a spotlight on the quality of instruction happening inside its classrooms, despite the school's challenging demographics.
Q1. What is the Project Lead The Way program at Fair Oaks?
Ans. Fair Oaks offers Project Lead The Way curriculum a hands-on STEM program that gives students real-world problem-solving experiences beyond standard classroom instruction. It's one of the few Title I campuses in the district running this program, making it a standout feature for families interested in early STEM exposure.
Q2. What after-school care does Fair Oaks offer?
Ans. The school runs the Right At School after-school program, which is supported by both state and city grants. It's been part of the school for years and includes homework support and enrichment activities. The school also has a state-recognized Healthy Behaviors Initiative component tied to nutrition in the after-school setting.
Q3. How does Fair Oaks support its English Language Learner students?
Ans. Fair Oaks has a dedicated English Learner Advisory Council that meets regularly and gives families a direct seat at the table when it comes to how EL programs are run on campus. Given that the school's student population is 43% Hispanic, language support is embedded in daily instruction.
Q4. What safety programs does the school have in place?
Ans. Fair Oaks follows MDUSD's district-wide safety protocols and has a formal School Safety Plan published on its website. The campus also has an African American Student Achievement group, which reflects the school's focus on closing equity gaps across different student populations.
Q5. How are parents involved at Fair Oaks?
Ans. The school has a Parent Teacher Organization that runs fundraising and community events throughout the year. Under Principal Amy Monaghan, family communication is handled directly through school email and the front office at (925) 685-4494. The school encourages parents to engage through the School Site Council as well.
