The Special Education Parent Academy, held at Howard Tanner Elementary in early 2025, was designed to assist families in comprehending and navigating the special education procedure in the Paramount Unified School District. The event counted as part of Howard Tanner’s outreach based on our commitment to linking high-need families with district resources, with all of the participating families being either minorities (100% of students are minorities) or economically disadvantaged (93% of students are economically disadvantaged). The Special Education Parent Academy is a significant example of ongoing institutional outreach beyond traditional academic programs.
Q1. Is there a full-time counselor for Howard Tanner Elementary?
Ans. According to data, Howard Tanner currently has one official full-time school counselor. Counselors at Howard Tanner provide students with social-emotional guidance, administer referral systems, and assist parents in connecting them to community resources. Parents interested in receiving counseling services should reach out to the school office.
Q2. Is there a GATE Program, and what are the qualifications?
Ans. Howard Tanner has a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program available to all students. The school follows a qualification process established by the Paramount Unified School District, which relies on a combination of teacher referral, academic achievement records, and parental input. If a parent believes their child's academic attainment may qualify for GATE, he/she should speak to the classroom teacher about starting the identification of their child.
Q3. Where is the Howard Tanner attendance area, and how do kids enroll?
Ans. Howard Tanner operates within the Paramount Unified School District's defined attendance area, giving priority enrollment to the children of families residing within the school's attendance area. All families wishing to enroll their children should contact the enrollment office of the Paramount Unified School District. New students will be required to present proof of residency, current immunization records, and their records from previous elementary schools. Families that do not live in the school attendance area may inquire about interdistrict transfer options.
Q4. How does Howard Tanner help students who are behind in their schoolwork?
Ans. Howard Tanner Elementary has specific funding for help for this type of student through the Title I program from the Federal Government that helps with academic support and help. Another way the school supports the students who need help is the use of Universal Access (UA) programming that is integrated into the daily instruction within the classroom for every student. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher or the School Counselor for assistance with academic support.
Q5. What are the after-school programs available at Howard Tanner Elementary?
Ans. Howard Tanner Elementary has partnered with Think Together to offer an After School Education and Safety Program from Paramount Unified School District that provides supervised, safe spaces for learning and enrichment activities after the bell has rung and school is over. The school office is the best place to contact in order to receive the most updated information for availability and dates for the 2025-2026 school year.
