Herndon-Barstow Elementary School was included in a student safety improvement project as Fresno County began installing a High Intensity Activated Crosswalk system on Grantland Avenue near the campus in August 2025. The HAWK system uses pedestrian-activated signals with red lights to require motorists to stop when someone is crossing. The project was implemented to improve traffic safety for students, families, and staff traveling to and from the school.
