Being Updated
Encino Charter Elementary entered 2025-26 in a leadership transition after long-time principal Ms. Koff retired following years of building the school into one of LAUSD's top-ranked elementary campuses. The school's charter renewal documentation, filed in July 2024, confirms the open-enrollment structure is locked in for the next charter term starting August 2025. The school's PTA remains one of the most active parent organizations at any LAUSD elementary, continuing to fund arts programming, music, field trips, and enrichment throughout the year
Q1. What is the difference between a charter school and a magnet school in LAUSD, and what category is Encino Charter?
Ans. Both accept students through an application process rather than neighborhood boundary assignment, but they operate differently. Magnet schools (like Academy for Enriched Sciences) are fully run by LAUSD. Charter schools like Encino Charter operate under an independent charter board that controls curriculum, staffing, and budget — though they still work within LAUSD's framework and use the district's facilities. In practice at Encino Charter, the open enrollment and independent structure means the school can maintain a culture and academic program that's somewhat distinct from a standard LAUSD neighborhood school.
Q2. How strong is the PTA at Encino Charter, and what does it fund?
Ans. Multiple parent reviews describe Encino Charter's PTA as one of the more financially active parent organizations at any LAUSD elementary school. It raises significant funds annually — used to restore arts programming, music, field trips, and enrichment that the district budget doesn't cover. For families who want to be involved and want those extras available for their kids, the PTA is a major reason this school delivers more than its per-pupil budget would otherwise suggest.
Q3. Does Encino Charter have open enrollment, and can students from outside Encino attend?
Ans. Yes — this is one of the school's most distinctive features. Any student in LAUSD can apply, regardless of home address. Families from Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana, and beyond have enrolled at Encino Charter specifically because they prioritized the school's academic profile. The application process follows LAUSD's charter lottery rules, with preference for siblings of current students.
Q4. What middle school do Encino Charter students typically attend after 5th grade?
Ans. Encino Charter is a K–5 school with no built-in continuation pathway — students finish in 5th grade and then apply to LAUSD middle schools through the standard process. Families interested in maintaining a charter or magnet pathway should research options like Hale Charter Academy, AE Wright Middle, or other LAUSD middle school programs during 4th or 5th grade to stay ahead of the application timeline.
Q5. How does Encino Charter communicate with parents?
Ans. The school uses a combination of email, a school app, and physical newsletters sent home with students. The PTA also maintains an active presence on social media and sends out its own communications alongside the school's official channels. For day-to-day contact, the front office at (818) 784-1762 is the most direct line. Given the open enrollment structure, the school also holds informational tours for prospective families — worth scheduling if you're considering applying from outside the Encino area.
