Being Updated
Academy for Enriched Sciences heads into 2025-26 ranked #239 in California, with both math and reading proficiency placing the school in the top 5% statewide. Under Principal Amy Petry, the school continues its STEAM magnet model with project-based learning that draws applications from across LAUSD. Career Day is expected to return this spring, and the school's magnet designation keeps it accessible to families well beyond the Encino neighborhood.
Q1. How do you apply to Academy for Enriched Sciences, and who is eligible?
Ans. The Academy is an LAUSD magnet school, which means any student living in the LAUSD attendance area can apply through the district's magnet application portal. Applications open each year in the fall, with enrollment decided through a points-based lottery system. Siblings of current students and students from underrepresented schools get priority points. The key is applying early the window is short and the school fills quickly.
Q2. What does the STEAM curriculum look like day to day?
Ans. It's project-based rather than lecture-based. Students work in groups to solve real science and engineering problems, with the school garden and science lab used as regular classroom extensions not just for special occasions. Teachers integrate technology and the arts into math and science units, which is what distinguishes a STEAM designation from a standard school with a few enrichment activities added on.
Q3. What is the school's chronic absenteeism rate, and why does it matter?
Ans. The Academy for Enriched Sciences has a chronic absenteeism rate of 6.9%. This figure is considerably better than the roughly 25% average seen across the Los Angeles Unified School District. This figure is important; schools with lower absenteeism generally experience more stable instruction, foster better relationships among students, and see greater parental involvement. It serves as a measure of how invested families are in the school community, rather than simply accepting it.
Q4. What after-school or enrichment programs does the school offer?
Ans. The school boasts a basketball court, along with handball courts and a playground. A school garden and a science lab round out the facilities.
These places provide opportunities for exploration and education that extend far beyond the confines of a traditional classroom.
After-school programming is available through LAUSD extended learning; families should contact the front office at (818) 609-8421 to confirm what's currently running and whether there's a waitlist.
Q5. What middle school do Academy for Enriched Sciences students typically attend?
Ans. The nearest middle school is George Ellery Hale Charter Academy, roughly 0.4 miles from the Academy. El Camino Real Charter High School is approximately 1 mile away. Families interested in maintaining a magnet or specialized program pathway should check LAUSD's middle school magnet options, as the transition from elementary magnet to a comparable middle school program requires a separate application.
