King Elementary School announced that second-grade teacher Keairra Watson was a finalist for the 2026 Nebraska Teacher of the Year award. She was recognized for blending the science of reading with engaging classroom practices.
Q1. How does King help kids learn how to read maps?
Ans. Students learn how to read maps in OPS social studies activities by using simple keys, symbols, and directional language.
Q2. What does the school do to help students learn more descriptive words?
Ans. During writing and speaking tasks, teachers use lists of sensory words, modeling, and guided practice.
Q3. What routines help students remember to do things in order?
Ans. Students practice listening for sequential cues, use visual reminders, and repeat directions back to their teachers.
Q4. How does King help kids learn about solids and liquids early on?
Ans. Students use district science materials to test properties, compare materials, and write down what they see.
Q5. How does the school help students work together on small group projects?
Ans. Teachers give students roles to play in groups, show them how to treat each other with respect, and set up structured check-ins that help the group succeed.
