About Jennifer Stephan
Jennifer Stephan is Dean of Academic Advising and Undergraduate Studies at Tufts University School of Engineering, a position she has held since September 2019 after serving as Senior Associate Dean from November 2017 to September 2019 and Associate Dean from June 2016 to November 2017. She represents the School of Engineering on key strategic and academic committees at Tufts, guides and implements changes to undergraduate academic policy, degree requirements and senior degree certification, oversees Tufts seventeen undergraduate engineering degrees, and leads a team of advisors providing holistic academic support to approximately 1200 undergraduate students. She launched Tufts first international program designed specifically for engineering students in collaboration with faculty and staff at the University of Pavia in Italy, increased the number of engineers studying abroad from 5 percent to 18 percent, co-chaired the Undergraduate Working Group of Tufts President Monaco's Mental Health Task Force from 2017 to 2019, and strategically led coordinated policy and process changes in response to the Covid-19 crisis to ensure student success, engagement and academic continuity.
In November 2018, Jennifer founded Lantern College Counseling LLC, where she serves families worldwide as an independent educational consultant and college counselor using the concept of Deep-Fit, an innovative paradigm for the college search and application process that she developed based on her decades of experience supporting college students. Deep-Fit is centered on thriving as a foundation for lifelong success, where at their Deep-Fit college, a student will have the opportunity to have positive, impactful experiences, meet their specific academic and personal goals, thrive and lay the foundation for a successful life to create their future. She provides comprehensive college admissions services, partnering with students and families to make the transition to college enjoyable and rewarding, and offers college counselors and families targeted expertise, most typically in the areas of STEM and transfer students. She is a member of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling and a professional member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, presents at national conferences, is interviewed by publications such as US News and World Report, and shares her expertise as a guest on podcasts.
Before joining Tufts, Jennifer spent nearly 21 years at Wellesley College, serving as Class Dean from September 2008 to June 2016 where she advised about 600 undergraduate students per class, served as campus expert for academic support of students interested in engineering, expanded engineering options by resurrecting the Wellesley-MIT double degree program, developing Wellesley-Olin double degree and certificate programs, hiring Wellesley's first engineering professor, serving on the Board of Admissions for transfer students and running transfer student orientation. From September 1995 to January 2009, she was Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Wellesley, teaching courses across the curriculum, increasing enrollments through dynamic instruction with consistently outstanding student evaluations, and enriching academic life by advising students, supervising senior honors projects and acting as mentor. Jennifer holds an MS and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, where she received the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award, and a BS in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University, where she graduated with Departmental and University honors and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honor societies. Her nature is fast-paced, energetic, direct and goal-oriented, with collaboration at the center of all her work.
