Virginia Beach, Virginia, is a busy coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean with a population of about 450,000. It is known for its beaches, neighborhoods that are good for families, and the right balance of suburban comfort and city convenience. There are 14 to 15 public middle schools in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) district that serve about 14,600 students in grades 6–8. There are also private and magnet schools. VBCPS puts a lot of focus on academic success, diversity, and enrichment programs. The districts middle schools do better than the state average in math and reading, and the district is in the top 20 percent of Virginia school systems. Some of the best middle schools that always do well are Old Donation, Princess Anne, and Great Neck. The district also supports arts, world languages, and the International Baccalaureate pathways, which indicates that they want to give students a full education.
