Lakewood Montessori Middle is a public middle school in Durham, North Carolina. It is in a big city and serves students in grades 6–8. There are about 303 students at the school, and there are 21 full-time equivalent teachers and one full-time school counselor. This means that there is one teacher for every 14 students. Lakewood Montessori Middle uses a Montessori-inspired method of teaching that focuses on independent thinking, working together, and learning by doing in core subjects like math, English language arts, science, and social studies. The school also offers elective and enrichment classes that help students think critically and be creative. State and national data show that 71% of students are good at math and 78% are good at reading. This is better than the average in North Carolina. The amount of money given to each student is in line with what is typical for Durham Public Schools.
