Worcester, Massachusetts — the state’s second-largest city — blends historic charm with academic and healthcare innovation. Known as the birthplace of rocket pioneer Robert H. Goddard, Worcester is home to over 200,000 residents and several colleges, including Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Worcester Public Schools serves around 24,000 students across 45 schools. Elementary proficiency rates remain a concern, averaging roughly 35% in reading and 30% in math. Yet, schools like Flagg Street School exceed 70% proficiency in both areas.
The district’s graduation rate has risen to 87%, supported by expanded ESL services, early college programs, and mental health initiatives.
