The school serves grades 9 through 12 and has about 600 students, which is a good number because there is only one teacher for every 14 students. It is one of the most well-known schools in the Northern Panhandle and focuses on preparing students for college through Advanced Placement courses. An impressive 24% of students take AP classes, and it is one of the best high school in West Virginia. There are 11% minority students at the school, and it offers special resources for students who are financially disadvantaged. 48% of students are good at reading and 17% are good at math. The school also helps students reach their goals by letting them take the SAT and ACT outside of class. Weir High School is known as one of the best schools because it has strong ties to the community and is always working to create a disciplined and academically challenging learning environment. Weir High School recently opened a brand-new gym and sports complex that was completely renovated with new seating and modern locker rooms, thanks to support from the community. The school's theater department got a lot of attention in the area for its most recent show, which used new digital stagecraft technology that was all handled by students. This year, the school also started a Peer Mentorship program that pairs upperclassmen with freshmen to help them adjust and get more involved on campus.
