The school has about 900 students and a good student-to-teacher ratio of about 11:1. One of the best schools because it has a full curriculum with a lot of Advanced Placement® courses and strong career-technical education pathways. The student body is becoming more diverse, with 37% of students being minorities and 36% being low-income. The performance data shows that 58% of students are good at reading and 30% are good at math, and it is one of the best high school in Maine. The school helps students take the SAT and ACT to help them reach their goals after high school. The campus is a supportive place to learn, and the median home price in the area shows that the suburbs are becoming more popular. Each student costs about $17,000 on average. South Portland High School recently honored the accomplishments of its winter sports teams. The boys' basketball and track teams both did well in the regional post-season brackets. The school is also expanding its "Career Pathways" program, which gives students hands-on workshops and chances to meet local professionals in healthcare and engineering. The performing arts department is also getting ready for its next musical production after a successful showcase of student-led compositions in the newly renovated audi to rium.
