There are between 600 and 700 students at the school, and it uses a career-focused model that combines academic lessons with hands-on technical training. The academy has a lot of career and technical education programs in addition to the main academic subjects. There are a lot of different kinds of students at the school, and a lot of them are minorities, which is similar to the population of Springfield. About 33% of students are good at math and about 46% are good at reading. This means that the results are improving. Funding follows the standards for public vocational education and helps pay for teachers, equipment, and training programs. The school puts a lot of emphasis on getting students ready for jobs, being responsible, and learning from their mistakes.

The Springfield School Committee recently voted to look into naming the gym at Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy after state Representative Bud Williams. This would honor local leadership and highlight community ties. Putnam is still changing its role as a vocational and academic school in Springfield's education system because of new district admissions rules.
