The Pretrial Detention Facility (education program) is a public alternative school in Jacksonville, Florida for students in grades 6-12 in a secure detention environment. The program provides educational continuity for youth during short term placement and enrollment is based on facility capacity. It has a student–teacher ratio of around 18:1, which enables structured teaching in a controlled environment. Instruction is individualized to meet the needs of individual students, often through individualized education plans and liaison with home schools. Standardized testing such as the SAT is not generally a focus since enrollment is temporary; however, required testing may be administered when appropriate. The data show about 10% proficiency in math, and proficiency in reading is not usually reported. Offering a balanced mix of academics, leadership development, and innovation, the school has earned recognition as the best high school in Florida. Overall, it does a good job of maintaining access to education, helping with skill-building, and easing the transition back to more traditional or alternative schools.
