As the only high school in its district, it offers about 450 students a focused college-preparatory environment with a student-to-teacher ratio of about 19:1. The school is known as one of the best for first-generation college students because it has a strong Advanced Placement program with a 52% participation rate. Downtown College Prep - Alum Rock has started a new College Persistence program for seniors that includes intensive workshops on how to get financial aid and how to enroll in college for the 2026 school year. The school recently added a Robotics and Engineering elective, which lets students learn about 3D printing and competitive coding by doing them. The campus is also hosting a series of career mentorship lunches where professionals from San Jose can meet with students to talk about careers in technology and healthcare.
