The California Academy of Mathematics and Science is a public magnet high school in Carson, California, for students in grades 9 through 12. The Long Beach Unified School District runs the school in partnership with California State University, Dominguez Hills. It is well-known for its strong focus on college readiness and STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and math). The academy has about 700 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of about 25:1. Students can also do research, work in labs, and work on STEM-based projects. Because it is so close to the university, students can use campus resources and get a taste of college life early on. The student body is very diverse and focused on academics, drawing students from all over the area. About 94% of students are good at math and about 99% are good at reading, which means that they are doing well in school. As part of getting ready for college, students also take standardized tests like the SAT.
