Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) serves about 11,335 elementary students across 16 schools, with a 14:1 student-teacher ratio and 72% minority enrollment, predominantly Hispanic and multilingual learners.In the 2023–24 school year, ACPS posted an average 61% pass rate in reading, 55% in math, and 71% in writing SOL assessments—all reflecting modest two-to-four-point year-over-year gains.
While these scores remain below Virginia averages (73% reading, 71% math), multiple schools saw rapid improvements and full accreditation in recent state audits. To sustain progress, ACPS is implementing tiered literacy supports, structured reading programs, and data-driven intervention strategies, with plans to expand tutoring and strengthen support for English learners. By focusing on equity-driven reforms and student growth metrics, Alexandria is working toward stronger elementary education outcomes.
