Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a lively coastal city in Horry County with about 41,600 people living there. It has a subtropical climate, miles of beaches, golf courses, and a lively tourism-driven lifestyle. It has the charm of a family-friendly town and the energy of a resort town. Horry County Schools runs the public elementary schools here. They have 28 elementary schools in the county and serve more than 48,000 students. There are about 20 public elementary schools in Myrtle Beach that serve more than 17,000 students. These schools do well in math and reading (above state average). There are also eight private elementary schools, most of which are religiously affiliated. The district's main academic goals are literacy and numeracy, but it also encourages diversity (about 42% of students in public schools are minorities) and a variety of extracurricular activities. Horry County Schools has 15 National Blue Ribbon schools, and Ocean Bay Elementary in Myrtle Beach was named a Blue.
