The School District of Lancaster educates about 10,075 students across 13 elementary schools in 2024–25, boasting high diversity: 88% students of color representing 51 native languages, with 85% qualifying for free/reduced lunch and 2,159 English Learners. However, performance lags: only 30% reading and 14% math proficiency, significantly below Pennsylvania averages (55% reading, 36% math).To close gaps, the district introduced structured literacy, multi-tiered supports, and targeted math interventions under its 2024–29 strategic plan, aiming to boost ELA and math by 3 points annually. Early results show strong growth: Wickersham and McCaskey elementary schools ranked among Pennsylvania’s top 10% for ELA gains in 2024, while Carter & MacRae and Washington schools led in math growth. By combining data-driven strategies with professional development and community rootedness, Lancaster is forging a path toward equitable and robust elementary education. Read more
